A one-off clean is what you book when you're moving out, expecting guests, or clearing up after building work. Recurring cleaning is a different proposition entirely: the same person comes round once a week or once a fortnight, and the place never really falls behind. In Dutch this kind of help is usually called huishoudelijke hulp (household help) or reguliere schoonmaak (regular cleaning), and it's normally arranged not as a single booking but as a standing arrangement — a subscription, in effect.

How recurring cleaning differs from a one-off

The difference isn't just frequency. It's the nature of the work.

A one-off clean is always playing catch-up. Someone walks into a home they've never seen before and spends half the time working out where things are, what's safe to use on the hob, which vacuum lives in the cupboard. And they're clearing months of build-up. That's why one-off cleans often run longer — and end up costing more than they seemed to at the outset.

Recurring cleaning is maintenance. By the second or third visit, the person knows your home: where the cloths are kept, which surfaces can't take an abrasive, what you'd rather they left alone. Each visit takes less time and the result is more consistent. You also get predictability — you know the place will be done on Wednesday afternoon, and you're not re-planning it every time.

There's a financial side too. With a fixed schedule, cleaners tend to hold their rate steady, because it's guaranteed work rather than a one-off trip across town. The rush surcharges that are perfectly normal on a single booking simply don't come up here.

Working out the monthly budget

The formula is simple, and it's worth having in mind before any conversation about money:

hourly rate × hours per visit × visits per month

Now the rates. One caveat straight away: these are ballpark figures. The market moves, and the actual number depends on the city, the neighbourhood, the job and the person.

Self-employed cleaner (ZZP, the Dutch term for a sole trader): roughly €18–28 per hour. This is the most common arrangement for household help.
Through a cleaning company or service: usually more expensive — the price covers overheads, recruitment, insurance and cover during sickness.

Now the maths. Say the rate is €22 an hour, the visit is 3 hours, and the person comes once a fortnight — that works out to about 2.2 visits a month. That puts you around €145 a month. With weekly visits of the same length, it's about €290. The figures are illustrative, but the arithmetic is exactly this, and it answers the main question: your monthly total is driven not so much by the rate as by the number of hours.

Which leads to a practical point. If the total comes out higher than you're comfortable with, revisit the frequency and the scope of the work first, and only then go looking for someone a couple of euros cheaper. What you save on the rate is almost always less than what you save by dropping one visit a month.

How many hours you actually need

The honest answer here is "it depends", and any precise figure you find online is made up. But it's perfectly possible to say what to look at.

Floor area and number of rooms. The obvious factor, though not the decisive one.

Number of bathrooms and toilets. This is the decisive one. Bathrooms are the most labour-intensive part of any home, and a second one adds noticeably more time to a visit than another bedroom would.

The kitchen and how you cook. If you cook properly every day, the kitchen takes more time than in a household that mostly reheats things.

Children and pets. Hair, marks, toys on the floor — none of this makes the cleaning itself much harder, but it does add to the prep: before a floor can be mopped, it has to be cleared.

Clutter. The more that's sitting on horizontal surfaces, the longer it takes. Spending ten minutes putting things away before the cleaner arrives quite literally saves you money.

As a rough guide: a studio or small flat usually means a short visit of around two hours; a two- or three-room flat with one bathroom more often three to four hours; a multi-storey house with two bathrooms, children or pets typically more — and that figure is better settled after the first visit than before it.

The most reliable approach isn't guessing but agreeing a trial visit: ask the person to come once, work through an agreed list, and then decide together how many hours it really takes. After that first time the estimate often shifts — in either direction.

Weekly or fortnightly

Choosing a frequency is really choosing who covers the gap between visits.

Once a fortnight works if you keep the basics ticking over yourself: doing the washing-up, wiping down the kitchen, running the vacuum through the busy areas every few days. The cleaner then handles what you never get round to, and two visits a month is enough.

Once a week makes sense if there are a lot of people in the house, small children or pets, or you cook a great deal — that is, if two weeks is enough for the place to reach a state a normal visit can't recover.

And this is the point to do the sums. If a fortnightly schedule means stretching every visit — say from three hours to four and a half, because otherwise it won't get done — then on our example you're already paying around €215 a month instead of €145. Weekly three-hour visits come to about €290: more expensive, but the gap narrows from roughly double to about a third, and the house isn't spending two weeks out of four falling behind. At that point the fairer question isn't "where's it cheaper" but "what am I getting for the difference".

The reverse happens too: if someone regularly finishes ahead of the agreed time, the visit is longer than it needs to be and is worth shortening.

What to agree on up front

Most friction over household help isn't about quality — it's about expectations that never quite lined up. Talk through the following before you start:

What's included and what isn't. The basic package is floors, dusting, bathrooms, kitchen, taking out the rubbish. But cleaning windows, the oven, defrosting the freezer, ironing and laundry are almost always a separate arrangement. Don't take them as given, and don't count on them "fitting in" to a normal visit.

Whose products and equipment. The usual arrangement in the Netherlands is that the vacuum, the mop and the cleaning products are yours, because the person arrives by bike or on public transport. If you have preferences — eco-friendly, unscented, a particular product for the hob — buy them yourself and show what goes with what.

Access to the home. Will you be in while the cleaning happens, or will you hand over a key? The second is more convenient, but it's a question of trust — people usually get there after a few visits, not straight away.

Cancellations and holidays. Agree how much notice a cancellation needs (a day is a sensible minimum) and what happens when you're away for a fortnight. Your slot is part of the cleaner's income, and last-minute cancellations are the main reason good people move on to other clients.

Cover during illness. A self-employed cleaner usually has no cover — the visit simply moves. A company more often does, but the person who turns up will be a stranger. Neither is a bad thing; just decide in advance which matters more to you.

A task list for the visit. A simple ten-point list on paper or in a message clears up 90% of misunderstandings. And it's easy to adjust: "windows instead of the balcony this time."

How payment works

For private individuals hiring help at home in the Netherlands, it's generally more straightforward than it first appears — this is an ordinary, everyday arrangement, not something exotic. Payment is most often made by bank transfer after the visit or at the end of the month, less commonly in cash.

The specific terms — how often you pay, what happens if a visit is cancelled, how you record what's been agreed — are best discussed directly with the cleaner before the first visit. Finding someone — and keeping them

A regular cleaner is a relationship, and they're built in much the same way every time.

Read reviews and look at consistency. For a standing arrangement, "turns up on time and gives notice" matters more than "left it spotless". Reliability is worth more here than shine.

Start with a trial visit. One visit, an agreed list, honest feedback afterwards. That's normal for both sides.

Give feedback straight away. If something wasn't done the way you wanted, say so after the first visit, not the fifth. Almost everything can be fixed with one sentence; staying quiet, by contrast, builds up and ends with you changing cleaner.

Keep the slot steady. The same day and the same time is the most valuable thing you can offer. A good cleaner holds on to a predictable schedule.

Don't haggle to the bone. A rate a couple of euros below the market almost always means that in a few months the person will find a better client. Stability is worth that money.

There are various ways to find someone. Through friends is reliable, but slow and it doesn't always come off. Through a company is quick, but pricier and with less choice. Recurring cleaning works out better than one-off cleans not because the hour is cheaper, but because the visits are shorter and more predictable. Budget with "rate × hours × visits", reckon on €18–28 an hour with self-employed cleaners (more through companies), and remember that the monthly total is driven by the number of hours, not the rate. Settle the real scope after a trial visit, talk through the task list, products, access and cancellations honestly — and try to keep the same person for the long run.
